If you are worried about receiving junk mail, spam, or viruses coming in with your email, then start using your Web Mail and screening everything before it reaches your computer. Web Mail can be gotten from Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail, just to mention a few. These are all free, there are many more if you do a search through one of the search engines, such as Google, Yahoo, etc. Most Internet Service providers offer web mail with your account, if you are using DSL or Cable or even dialup, you have a web mail account. Most people set these up to have their mail sent into their Outlook Express box or some other mailbox that they have installed on their computer.

Now many of these web mail accounts now have in place some sort of filter that can stop the spam from coming to your computer mailbox. Most of them even allow you to set the filter the way you want it, to allow certain things through. If you have used your web mail before, you will notice some sort of file in the left column that says "Junk Mail", "Spam", or something similar. These are all great, but the real filter is you. Look at the mail and delete the ones you don't want. You can even open up questional mail or attachments while in your web mail box and not have to worry about getting a virus on your computer. The web mail people have antivirus software in place to protect them.

After you have gotten rid of the mail you don't want, then open the mailbox on your computer and receive those that you wanted to accept. Now you have protected your computer from bad email. While you are on the road, away from home, you will be using your web mailbox, because you will not be able to use the mailbox that is on your computer. To be completely safe, never have any mail come to your computer until you have checked it.
